COSHH Swimming Pools

With more and more people and businesses becoming aware of hazardous substances, it is not surprising to find that the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations is now applying to swimming pools. COSHH swimming pools are those where the employees or operators of the pool have carried out assessments on all of the hazardous material used in the water and how it affects the swimmers overall health. In order to make sure that a COSHH swimming pool is meeting all of the regulations, employees have to take certain measures to ensure the protection of everyone within the pool area.
It does not matter if the COSHH swimming pool is above ground, shaped like an oval, or is considered a portable pool, there are rules that must be obeyed in order to keep the pool in service. Most of the COSHH swimming pool regulations have to do with cleaning the pool and the chemicals that are used in killing the algae and bacteria. If you work with a pool and you follow the COSHH swimming pool regulations, your will be required to adhere to the following rules, as printed in the COSHH regulation pamphlet:
- Always read and follow the instructions printed on the container.
- Never transfer chemicals into other containers.
- Never mix different chemicals in the same container.
- Ensure that chemicals are stored in a secure, dry, cool and well ventilated store.
- Store only the minimum amount of chemicals and try not to bulk store.
- Always use the protective clothing and equipment stated on the chemicals label.
- Always add chemicals to water and never add water to chemicals.
- Never leave utensils in chemicals or chemical substances.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling chemicals.
- Clear small chemical spillages immediately by flushing with water. Dose the pool at least half an hour before use.
COSHH swimming pools are some of the safest pools to swim in because of the strict adherence to the regulations. In addition to safety of the pools themselves, many swimming pool products such as floating aids and the designs of swimming gear follow strict COSHH regulations.
